How I Keep Up-To-Date
A list of things I consume to keep up-to-date on tech
Table of contents
I’ve had a few people ask me what I read / watch / listen to so I can keep up to date on programming / tech news. Here’s a list of everything I can think of right now.
A disclaimer: I am not co-opting the opinions of all these sources. I probably disagree with the narrative of around 30-50% of the things I consume on the day-to-day. I would suggest you take everything with a grain of salt and form your own opinions. These resources are great for awareness though!
Podcasts
These are great to throw on in the gym or when walking to work. Just something to consume in the background while doing other stuff and still exercising your brain
- Hard Fork - The New York Times mostly about AI and tech stuff going on in SF
- Syntax - Web Development Podcast also has a YouTube channel with some good info on it
- ShopTalk – A podcast about front end web design and UX. Web development focused show.
- The Changelog podcast A more general SWE tech show. Lots of news and interviews.
YouTube Channels
These in particular are full of hot-takes and click bait for the most part but I generally appreciate the exposure. True toss-up whether I agree with the takes within though.
- The PrimeTime - YouTube : former senior SWE at Netflix- now a youtuber / streamer making content for developers
- Theo - t3․gg - YouTube : A little sensationalist but it usually on the cutting edge of what’s going on in SF
- KRAZAM - YouTube : Satire is important
- Low Level - YouTube : Cyber Security focused content and news
Blogs
I follow LOTS of blogs but here are a few that I read the most regularly / find the most gems on:
- Julia Evans
- Kent C. Dodds
- The Homepage of Dave Rupert - daverupert.com
- Chris Coyier – Web craftsman, blogger, author, speaker.
- Register Spill | Thorsten Ball | Substack
- Cassidy Williams
- Things Of Interest @ Things Of Interest
- Brain Baking
- Jim Nielsen’s Blog
- LOW←TECH MAGAZINE
- Henry From Online
- Home | Rach Smith’s digital garden
- Maggie Appleton
- Josh Collinsworth
- Ariel Salminen | Design Systems Architect from Helsinki, Finland
- Steph Ango
The most important one: BUILDING
Just go build stuff. Useless stuff, things that have no real purpose. This is how you build skills. I’ve learned 100x more from building useless todo apps or blogs to learn a new technology than I have actually reading or listening to anything.
